You can teach in either kindergarten or elementary. There are some middle
school and high school positions available. |
|
It is most likely that you will be teaching in a Hagwon (English academy) for
elementary aged children. Children attend these schools after their School day
has finished. Classes tend to start around 3 in the afternoon and continue to
around 8 or 9 in the evening. Elementary children age from 7 years old (western
age) to 12 years old. |
|
Some schools cater for kindergarten students. The
children are usually aged from 4 years old to 6 years
old. Kindergarten often starts around 9 or 10 in the
morning and continues to 1 or 2 in the afternoon. You
will then teach some elementary classes and finish
around 4 to 6pm.
Teaching kindergarten you are often more involved in the
school and the relationships you build with your
kindergarten students are stronger than that of your
elementary. Plus it can be more fun! |
|
Schools are very well equipped and follow strict
curriculum. |
|
You will generally have Korean co-teacher. While not in the class at the same
time you work closely with them and they can be a great support helping you in
school and also socially too. |
The English ability of your students varies from complete beginners to an
advanced level. Many kids have studied in North America. Classes will usually be
focused on conversational English. Teaching material will be slanted towards this
rather than grammar, which your Korean co-teacher will teach.
